Diagnosis: describe the problem before choosing the work
For a tank water heater, distinguish no hot water from a supply that runs out during use. A failed heating component, a control problem and a mismatch between demand and recovery are different possibilities. Water beside the heater may come from a connection or another source; it does not establish that the storage tank has failed.
If the current heater is failing, begin with the symptoms and supported diagnostic scope. Read the tank water heater repair guide.

Decision: repair, replacement or a different system?
Ask whether the problem is a serviceable component or a confirmed leak from the storage vessel itself. Compare the proposed repair, parts availability and overall condition with a correctly sized replacement. Capacity alone is not enough: first-hour delivery and recovery affect how the system handles successive showers.
When replacement is being considered, compare the cause of failure with the work needed to install the next system. Review installation and replacement requirements.
If you are considering electrification, compare a standard electric tank with heat pump equipment, including air space, condensate drainage and electrical requirements. Compare heat pump installation requirements.

Preparation: useful details for an assessment
- Note the tank capacity, fuel type and model from an accessible label.
- Describe whether hot water never arrives or runs out after specific uses.
- List the fixtures used together and any recent change in household demand.
- Photograph visible connections and the surrounding floor only from a dry, safe location.
Do not remove covers, adjust gas controls, touch wiring or approach standing water to gather information. Share only what you can observe safely.

Frequently asked questions about your next step
Does running out of hot water mean the tank is too small?
Not necessarily. Demand, recovery and a heating fault can produce similar complaints. Describe when the supply runs out so a diagnosis can distinguish capacity from a component problem.
Can a leaking tank be repaired?
A leak at a serviceable connection is different from a confirmed leak through the storage vessel. Ask for the source to be identified before comparing repair and replacement.
